1986 - Our Founding Year
After organizing in 1985, the Alternative Fund received nonprofit status in 1986. There were eight organizing nonprofits in the federation that varied in purpose and size. Founding members included Community Resource Center, Empowerment Program, KUVO, Association for Senior Citizens, Denver Urban Ministries, NARF, and Peace Net.
1987 - Grassroots Giving
Community Shares runs its first Community Giving Campaign in 1987 raising just under $4,000.
1989 - Inclusion in First Major Campaign
After several challenging formative years, Community Shares participated as a federation in the 1989 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC).
1990 - Full Combined Campaign Participation
Colorado Governor Richard Lamm and Denver Mayor Frederico Pena opened up the Colorado Combined Campaign (CCC) and Denver Employees Combined Campaign (DECC) to participation of federations in addition to United Way.
1991 - First Campaign Milestone: $100,000
Executive Director Greg Truog is hired who leads Community Shares from 1991-2003.
1993 - Expansion to Boulder Valley, Pikes Peak, and Western Slope
Each regional chapter is led by local nonprofit representatives who play an essential role in Community Shares' growth.
1995 - Community Shares Passes $500,000 in Annual Giving
Community Shares passes the $500,000 mark with 38 nonprofit members.
2002 - Community Shares Passes $1,00,000 in Annual Giving
The National Alliance for Choice in Giving honors Community Shares of Colorado with the "Momentum Award" as the first community-based fund in the nation to pass the million dollar milestone.
2004 - Denver Employees' Emergency Program
Community Shares becomes fiscal manager for DEEP, an emergency fund for City of Denver employees.
2010 - CSC Becomes Fiscal Manager of Partnership for Colorado
Community Shares works with Black United Fund of Colorado, Caring Connection, and Community Health Charities of Colorado to restructure Partnership for Colorado (PFC) to become more efficient and effective.
2011 - 25th Anniversary Celebration
At our 25th Anniversary Summer Celebration, Community Shares announced it had passed $20 million in total community giving.
2012 - Colorado Collaborative for Nonprofits Established
Community Shares is a founding member of Colorado Collaborative for Nonprofits along with Colorado Nonprofit Association, Colorado Nonprofit Development Center (CNDC), Community Resource Center (CRC), and Metro Volunteers.
2014 - Community Shares Named Manager of the CCC
Community Shares is selected by the Colorado Combined Campaign Advisory Committee to manage the Colorado Combined Campaign (DECC) for the State of Colorado. This includes more than 50,000 employees donating more than $1MM annually.
2015 - BBB Torch Award for Marketplace Trust for Small Nonprofit
Community Shares awarded the BBB Torch Award for Marketplace Trust for Small Nonprofit category, a tribute to organizations who exemplify an outstanding commitment to fair, honest, and ethical practices.
2015 - CSC Manages More Than $3,000,000 in Annual Giving
2016 - Community Shares Named Manager of the DECC
Community Shares is selected by the Denver Employees' Combined Campaign Advisory Committee to manage the Denver Employees' Combined Campaign (DECC) for the City and County of Denver.
2016 - 30th Anniversary, $30 Million in Total Community Giving
2017 - CRS Solutions of Colorado Established
Community Shares and Spark the Change Colorado found CSR Solutions of Colorado, a collaborative effort expanding local philanthropic services, volunteerism strategy, and best practices in corporate social responsibility support for small and medium sized companies in Colorado.
2018 - Bill Daniels Ethical Leadership Award
Community Shares was selected as the inaugural recipient of the Bill Daniels Ethical Leadership Award at Colorado Nonprofit Association's Nonprofit Week Awards luncheon. The award is sponsored by The Daniels Fund.
2019 - The Civic 50 Colorado Inaugural Year
Community Shares of Colorado and Spark the Change Colorado collaborate with Points of Light to regionalize The Civic 50 survey for state wide use collecting data from Colorado companies of 15 employees or more. Colorado’s 50 most civic minded companies honored.
2020 - Community Giving Milestone: Community Shares Reaches $45 Million in Total Community Giving
2021 - 35th Anniversary, Elevating Our Technology to New Heights
Community Shares celebrates 35 years of inspired philanthropy by announcing plans to design and build a proprietary custom online giving technology to elevate the stories of our member nonprofits and connect them to small and medium sized companies in Colorado looking to expand their Corporate Social Responsibility footprint.
