1987

The founding members of Community Shares, "a choice for change", participate in their first workplace giving campaign raising $4,000.

1989

Greg Truog becomes Executive Director and goes on to lead Community Shares for 14 years and raise over $7.5 million for Colorado's nonprofits.

1993

Boulder Valley Chapter is added with early members Eco-Cycle, Humane Society of Boulder Valley, and HospiceCare of Boulder/Broomfield Counties.

1999

Community Shares is named the 1999 Outstanding Service Organization for Colorado on National Philanthropy Day.

2007

Community Shares' You. Me. Us campaign redefines the word "philanthropist" to include anyone who makes positive decisions that benefit their local community. In 2007 we raise more than $1.5 million in one campaign for the first time.

2009

Community Shares looks for new ways to engage Coloradans who want to make a difference and need a place to start.  The very best attributes of Community Shares are combined with the most current online technologies to create an online giving tool, My Colorado Project.

Highlights and Milestones

 In 1986 a small group of community focused, grassroots organizations joined together as the "Alternative Fund" to include new and diverse Colorado nonprofits in workplace giving campaigns. This group soon renamed themselves "Community Shares of Colorado."

Over the next 25 years we've changed a lot but our goals remain the same.

  • Broaden charitable choice in Colorado
  • Provide and encourage Coloradans to utilize financially accessible and cost-effective giving options
  • Build the capacity of vital and vibrant Colorado nonprofits
  • Drive innovation by putting unrestricted funding in the hands of local expert change-makers
1991

Community Shares raises more than $100K for the first time in an annual giving campaign.

1992

 With Black United Fund for Colorado, Caring Connection, and Community Health Charities of Colorado the Partnership for Colorado is born! A collaboration of workplace federations serving six counties in the Metro Denver region.

1995

We're building momentum! In 1995, Community Shares passes for the first time $500K in the annual giving campaign!

 

2002

Community Shares passes $1 million is a single campaign year and receives the Momentum Award from the National Alliance for Choice in Giving, honoring Community Shares as the first community-based fund in the nation to pass the million dollar milestone.

2003-2006

Over the next four years Community Shares reaches more than 250,000 people per year, partners with more than 100 member nonprofits, and generates $1 million+ per year for the local community.

2008

Faced with the most challenging economy since the 1930s Community Shares is challenged to give even more back to Colorado nonprofits.  Every $1 donated with Community Shares, $10 is invested back into the local community.

2010

In 2010, Community Shares gets ready to celebrate its 25th year having raised more than $20 million for Colorado with an average gift of under $1 a day! Every dollar makes a difference™.  Thank you!
