MEMBER NONPROFITS

Tuesday Talk: March 4, 2008

Farewell from Kyle

Dear friends,

Working for Community Shares, I've enjoyed the unique opportunity to interact with many  nonprofits providing crucial services in Colorado.  Speaking and learning about our membership was the highlight of my job and something I took tremendous pride in.  After two and a half years, I have decided it is now time to take the experience and knowledge from my time at CSC and try something new.  My final day in the office will be March 21 and then I'm off to discover my next adventure.

It has been my pleasure to work with you.  Thank you for the work that you do, and the impressions you've made.

Kyle Backlund

2008 Documentation Update

Thanks for your diligence in submitting all necessary recertification documents for Community Shares, Denver Employees Combined Campaign, Colorado Combined Campaign and the Combined Federal Campaigns.   We have been in contact with all agencies to collect any missing information.  Please continue to provide requested documents until your file is complete so we can assure your agency's eligibility and participation in these campaigns.

Book signing to benefit Community Shares

Laurie Cameron, author of The Journey From Fear to Love: Waking Up and Walking the “Evolutionary Relationship” Path With Your Partner, is hosting a book signing and silent auction to benefit Community Shares of Colorado.  The free event will be held on Sunday, March 9, 2008, from 2-5 pm, at Jazz@Jack’s in the Denver Pavilions (500 16th St., Ste. 320, Denver).  Included is a performance by Face, the nationally recognized vocal rock band.  $4 from every book sold will be donated to Community Shares.  Seating is limited and reservations are required.  RSVP to Kathy Klaus at 303-777-1217.  More info

Volunteers needed!

Community Shares needs volunteer help with some light administrative work between now and the end of March.  Duties will include folding materials and stuffing envelopes.  Participation hours will be given, or if applicable, class or internship credit will be given.  For more information, contact Mary Snyders.

Cherry Creek Youth/Adult Summit

There is still room for a few more agencies at the Cherry Creek Youth/Adult Summit.  If your charity has volunteer projects available for high school youth, please consider signing up to participate in the fair.

March 8, 8:30AM - 1:30PM @ Grandview High School (20500 E. Arapahoe Rd., Aurora)
Breakfast, lunch, table and chairs are supplied by the conference.

Additional information will be sent to those who sign up to participate.  Please contact Kyle Backlund to sign up or with questions.

MANAGING CONFLICT

Outstanding Member Agency

Pikes Peak Justice and Peace Commission

Pikes Peak Justice and Peace Commission (PPJPC) is a community-based organization grounded in principles of nonviolence, solidarity with the poor and oppressed, sustainable living, and social and economic justice.  Last March, PPJPC volunteers, board members, staff and friends donned green t-shirts with peace signs and, as they did the year before, joined board member Eric Verlo's Bookman entry to march in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.  One official motioned for the group to begin.  A block and a half later, another official stopped the group, and seven people were arrested.  While the incident triggered an emotional response in the community, PPJPC continued to promote peaceful conflict resolution. Due to their determined efforts, the PPJPC was invited to participate in the 2008 parade taking place March 15th.  Executive Director of PPJPC, Jeff Briggs, is an active member of the Pikes Peak Chapter of Community Shares, as well as a contributing member of the Pikes Peak Equality Coalition (PPEC).

OUTSTANDING WORKPLACE

Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente’s goal of total community health is deeply embedded in their nearly 40-year history in Colorado as a prevention-oriented health care organization.  Community & Local Government Relations Coordinator, Jana Baker, said, “Partnership with key organizations such as Community Shares allows KP employees to make a true impact.  The giving campaign makes it as easy as possible for employees to support organizations they are passionate about through payroll deduction.”  KP sponsors a highly successful employee giving campaign raising nearly a quarter of a million dollars annually for local nonprofit organizations and internal community benefit funds.  In addition, KP is committed to outreach through four core areas of community benefit work: care and coverage for low-income people; partnership with Safety Net Clinics to increase access to care; community health initiatives; and, developing and disseminating health knowledge to improve the quality of care for all patients.  “Community benefit is not always easily measured in numbers and dollar amounts.  At the end of each day, there is no greater satisfaction than knowing we are making a difference; one person at a time, one community at a time.”
