Each year Community Shares of Colorado accepts applications for nonprofit membership. In order to apply for membership that will begin in 2009, a Membership Interest Form is due to Community Shares by July
15, 2008. To obtain a Membership Interest Form, please contact
Jodi Korthuis and put “Membership Interest Form Request” in the subject line. All Interest Forms received will be reviewed by the Community Shares Membership Committee, comprised of representatives from our current member nonprofits. Applications are sent by invitation only to select agencies that meet initial membership requirements. The Committee reviews all applications and recommends agencies to the board of directors and current membership.
If you have questions about the process, contact
Jodi Korthuis, Member Services Manager.
to the Community Shares Board of Directors
. Each December, the entire membership of Community Shares
votes to accept recommended agencies.
The following are requirements for Community Shares Membership consideration:
1. Be recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)3 organization.
2. Produce an Annual Report including: program information specific to the year of the report, financial information including method of solicitation and use of contributions, chief administrative personnel and a list of the Board of Directors.
3.IRS 990 signed by an officer of the organization. Officers typically include members of the Board of Directors such as the President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary. In most organizations, the Executive Director is not an officer of the organization.
4. If the agency receives over $250,000 in annual revenue, the agency should provide an audit for same FYE as IRS 990 submitted.
5. If the agency receives less than $250,000 in revenue the agency should provide a financial statement such as a review, profit and loss statement or balance sheet for same FYE as IRS 990 submitted.
6. An Administrative and Fundraising percentage under 35%. (Using IRS 990, add lines 14 and 15 and divide by line 12.)
7. If Administrative and Fundraising percentage is over 35%, the agency must provide a written explanation.
8. A list of current Board of Directors including City, State address and places of employment. To maintain stability, the Board of Directors should be comprised of a minimum of 5 (five) voting members. To discourage conflict of interest, the majority of the Board of Directors should not be: compensated by the organization, family members, or a combination of the two resulting in a majority. Also, one person cannot function as the Executive Director and sole officer of the organization.
9. The organization’s Non-Discrimination Policy covering clients and people served, paid and volunteer staff, and board members, signed and dated by an appropriate officer. No member organization may discriminate on the basis of sex, race, creed, religion, national origin, color, age, veteran status, mental or physical disability, marital status, sexual orientation or gender identity for the purpose of service, employment, membership or leadership. If the organization’s current Non-Discrimination Policy does not cover all categories listed above, the Executive Director or an officer of the organization may sign a certification of nondiscrimination.
10. The organization must have a street address or physical location, dedicated phone line and dedicated email address.
