Investing your Contributions
We take your financial support of
us seriously. Each month we will provide an update in this section on
our investment of your donations. In other words, the things we are
doing with your money. To begin, you will hear more in the coming
months about the launch of a new program of Community Shares called
"My Colorado". It embraces the value of younger community members
(ages 24-39) in philanthropy and community building. My Colorado will
engage this younger generation in basic philanthropy, nonprofit board
service, and community involvement outside of our traditional efforts in
the workplace using a "high tech, high touch" model. This fits very
well with our mission and we feel it is important to build a
relationship with this key generation as well as diversify sources of
support for our member nonprofit partners. Community Shares will
officially begin My Colorado in the 2nd half of 2007.
Steve Graham, Remembered
Steve Graham, a well known figure
in the nonprofit world, passed away on December 20, 2006. Steve helped
found Community Shares of Colorado along with several other visionary
people in the late 1980's. Without his guidance and contribution, our
eventual success would not have been a given. Getting Community Shares
into the realm of workplace philanthropy was not easy and it took people
with Steve's ability, passion, and risk taking to make it happen.
On a personal note, Steve welcomed Jesse Wolff into the nonprofit sector
three years, working together on several community projects. Jesse
learned first hand how Steve moved in the community, what his ideals
were, how respected he was, and how committed he was to improving the
strength, fairness, and vibrancy of the Colorado community.
Several hundred people attended a memorial for Steve at the end of
January. It was a touching, poignant tribute that really captured his
essence and impact. The final photo in a slide show pictorial was of
Steve walking with a backpack into a wilderness area with no path in
sight and a large mountain in the background. What a perfect metaphor
of Steve and his life's work. We'll all miss him.
